Srinagar, Feb 14: For the first time since the Kashmiri Pandits genocide in 1990, Hindi will be taught as a separate subject in private schools after 32 years in Kashmir Valley.

Hindi to be taught in private schools in Kashmir after 32 years

With an aim to execute this, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has formed a committee of eight members. The committee will submit its recommendations to the administration by February 20 for teaching the Hindi language in Class 1 to 10 in more than 3,000 private schools in Kashmir.

In the Jammu region, the Hindi language is taught in government as well as in private schools, however, currently, there is no provision for teaching Hindi subject in Kashmir.

One of the main reasons is that there is a shortage of Hindi teachers in the Kashmir Valley. Since the 1990s, Kashmiri Pandits who taught Hindi were forced to leave the Kashmir Valley. Since then, there have been no teachers to teach Hindi in the schools of Kashmir and the children here have stopped learning Hindi.

Presently, the students learn only English, Urdu, and Kashmiri languages in the private schools of the Valley. Reports suggest before 1990, the Hindi language was taught in more than 70 percent of private schools of the Valley.
