In the latest example, Indian media twisted the news to run their narrative and attempted to mislead people while giving half information about the judgement, reported that the Supreme Court on Tuesday imposed a ban on the sale and use of firecrackers.
What Media reported
As per the media, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said that the ban imposed on the sale and use of firecrackers is not just confined to Delhi-NCR only, instead it applies to the whole country. The top court made this observation while responding to a plea over alarming high pollution levels in Udaipur, falling air quality index and lack of regulations to demarcate noise pollution levels.
It may be noted that the Supreme Court had earlier refused to lift the ban on the sale of firecrackers as it was contributing to the air pollution crisis. The Supreme Court, while upholding the ban on firecrackers, asserted that ''curbing pollution is not just the court's duty.'' “When it comes to pollution, there is a wrong perception it is the duty of courts. But it has to be everybody’s duty,” the top court said.
Meanwhile, it also refused to interfere with the Delhi Government’s decision to put a complete ban on the use of firecrackers in the national capital. The top court was dealing with the issue relating to firecrackers.
One of the pleas was filed by BJP leader Manoj Tiwari in 2022, challenging the blanket ban on firecrackers during Diwali celebrations in Delhi. In 2021, the Supreme Court clarified there is no blanket ban on the use of firecrackers and only those fireworks which contain barium salts are prohibited.
What is the full judgement?
It should be highlighted that, that Supreme Court's decision to ban firecrackers across the country is limited only for Barium salts' firecrackers. The Supreme Court said: “Earlier directions against use of barium & banned chemicals in firecrackers are applicable to all States. There is no total ban on firecrackers & only THOSE firecrackers are banned that contained barium salts".
Firecrackers companies have already shifted on Green crackers and it's allowed by SC under the judgement of 2018.
Green crackers are only banned in Delhi and not across India!
What are Barium salts firecrackers ?
Barium salts are sometimes used in fireworks and firecrackers to produce vivid colors when they burn. These salts are responsible for creating specific colors in fireworks displays by emitting characteristic wavelengths of light when they are heated to high temperatures. Barium compounds are known to produce green colors when burned in fireworks.
Barium is also known as a muscle poison. It can cause human toxicity, which may lead to significant hypokalemia.
