Raipur, Nov 5: A Bharatiya Janata Party leader named Ratan Dubey was murdered in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur at the Kaushalnagar village market while campaigning for Assembly elections on Saturday. However, Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel has labeled the murder by Maoists as "some small incidents".
"The vice president of the BJP's Narayanpur district unit, Ratan Dubey, was killed by stabbing with a sharp object at approximately 5:30 p.m. in the Kaushalnagar village market on Saturday, which is under the jurisdiction of the Jharaghati police station. He was actively campaigning for the Assembly elections, which are set for November 7 and 17", according to Additional Superintendent of Police Hemsagar Sidar.
As Dubey was speaking to a group of individuals, two people emerged from the crowd and struck him in the back of the head, according to an eyewitness.
"Dubey ran towards his car and tried to get inside but a few more persons surrounded him and attacked him with sharp edged weapons leading to his death on the spot. The incident led to chaos. BJP workers later rushed to the police station located around 5 kilometres away from the site," he was quoted by PTI in its report.
Reacting to this development, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel expressed condolences to the family members on Dubey’s demise and said that the Naxals have moved back after pressure from security forces.
“Due to the pressure from our force the Naxals have moved back...Some small incidents have been happening but the situation has improved..." he said.
Narayanpur is among the 20 constituency seats that will undergo polls for the first phase of the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly elections on November 7. The second phase of polling will take place on November 17 for the 90-member Chhattisgarh Assembly while the votes will be counted on December 3.
Earlier in October, unidentified individuals shot and killed a BJP worker in a rural area of the insurgency-hit Mohla-Manpur-Ambagarh Chowki district near Rajnandgaon.
