Hamirpur, Nov 30: In a shocking development, an Imam of Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh has raped an 11-year-old in a mosque. The police arrested the cleric, identified as Muntazir Alam, on the charges of rape and under the provisions of the Prevention Of Children from Sexual Offences Act in the district’s Kuraur area.

The incident allegedly took place when the girl had gone to the mosque with her cousins to learn Arabic and Udru from Imam Muntazir Alam, 28, in a mosque in the Kurara area, the police added.

The Imam stopped the girl after the class and took the girl to his room in the mosque where he raped her. As her screams drew the attention of the others, the imam ran away.

Later, when the girl reached home, she told her parents about the incident, and they informed the police. The girl was shifted to a hospital. Her father, a truck driver, was in Banda district at the time of the incident.

Station House Officer, Kurara, Sri Prakash Yadav said that an FIR has been registered in this connection under the relevant sections of the IPC and the POCSO Act, and the accused, who belongs to Bihar, has been detained.
