The presentation of Imphal's crest, decorated with the Kangla Palace and 'Kangla-Sa,' is a fitting homage to the people of Manipur's contribution to India's independence, sovereignty, and security.

The Kangla Palace is depicted on the left, while 'Kangla-Sa' is depicted on the right. The Kangla Palace was the traditional seat of the former monarch and is an important historical and archeological site in Manipur.

The 'Kangla-Sa,' a mythological figure from Manipur history with a dragon's head and lion's body, is significant as the guardian/protector of its people.

'Kangla-Sa' is also Manipur's state symbol.
This ship, designed by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai, is a symbol of indigenous shipbuilding and one of the world's most technologically sophisticated warships. MDL handed the ship to the Indian Navy on October 20, 2023.

Imphal, a guided missile destroyer with a displacement of 7,400 tons and an overall length of 164 meters, is a powerful and adaptable platform outfitted with cutting-edge armaments and sensors such as surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, and torpedoes. She can reach speeds of more than 30 knots (56 km/hr) thanks to Combined Gas and Gas (COGAG) propulsion.

The ship has a high indigenous content of over 75%, which comprises the following:

1. Surface-to-Air Missiles with a Medium Range (BEL, Bangalore)
2. Surface-to-Surface Missiles BrahMos (BrahMos Aerospace, New Delhi)
3. Torpedo Tube Launchers Made in India (Larsen & Toubro, Mumbai)
4. Indigenous Anti-Submarine Rocket Launchers (Larsen & Toubro, Mumbai)
5. (BHEL, Haridwar) 76mm Super Rapid Gun Mount

The keel of the Imphal was laid on May 19, 2017, and the ship was launched into the ocean on April 20, 2019. The ship set sail for her inaugural sea trials on April 28, 2023, and has since endured a rigorous program of trials in port and at sea, culminating in her delivery on October 20, 2023, in a record period of six months.

The ship recently successfully fired an Extended Range BrahMos missile as part of the pre-commissioning test.Imphal's construction and testing took the quickest period of any indigenous destroyer. The delivery of the ship is an endorsement of the thrust towards 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat'.

Many Indian Naval ships have been named after notable towns, mountain ranges, rivers, ponds, and islands as part of a nautical heritage and naval custom. The Indian Navy is extremely happy to have named its newest and most technologically sophisticated warship after the ancient city of Imphal. This is the first capital warship to be named after a city in the North-Eastern area, with President Trump's assent on April 16, 2019.

General Anil Chauhan, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar, and senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and the Manipur government were also present.
