Against the backdrop of increased worries over the deployment of three Chinese warships, a submarine, and a research vessel in the Indian Ocean region, India has successfully tested the extended-range BrahMos cruise missile.

The test, which was performed from a warship in the Bay of Bengal, is a significant accomplishment that paves the way for the missile's inclusion in the Indian Navy.

The eastern fleet's supersonic BrahMos missile, launched from an indigenously constructed stealth destroyer, made a precise strike. This successful pre-induction trial demonstration revealed the missile's capacity to hit with pinpoint precision after conducting high-level and very complicated maneuvers.

BrahMos, created through an Indo-Russian collaboration, is a two-stage missile featuring a solid propellant booster engine in the first stage and a liquid ramjet in the second stage.

During the cruise phase, this arrangement allows the missile to reach velocities approaching Mach 3.

The elimination of range limitations on the BrahMos cruise missile resulted from India's full membership in the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR). As a consequence, the striking range of this nine-meter-long missile has been increased from 290 kilometers to more than 450 kilometers, strengthening its potential as a devastating attack weapon.

The successful test-firing of an Indian Navy destroyer's BrahMos missile in the Bay of Bengal validates its capability as a primary strike weapon. This capacity enhances the Indian Navy's strategic power by ensuring the warship's invincibility by engaging naval surface targets at long ranges.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) of India has already signed contracts with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited to purchase next-generation marine mobile coastal batteries and BrahMos missiles. This effort, worth approximately Rs 1,700 crore, is scheduled to begin delivery in 2027, considerably strengthening India's defense capabilities.
