The prototype flew for the first flight, marking an important milestone in Russia's aviation aspirations. According to UAC, this aircraft might be used to replace Western equivalents in the country's aviation sector.

According to a recent UAC press statement, the IL-96-400M prototype conducted a successful 26-minute test flight. It achieved heights of up to 2,000 meters (6,562 feet) and speeds of up to 390 kilometers per hour (242 mph) during its journey. This accomplishment highlights the aircraft's potential as a long-distance passenger jet.

The IL-96-400M is expected to carry up to 370 people, putting it up against proven aircraft such as Airbus' A340 and Boeing's 777. According to UAC, the aircraft can be customized for up to three passenger classes and features a "modern infotainment system," which includes internet, TV, and satellite communications. It will also include a modern kitchen, which will improve the entire passenger experience.

The IL-96-400M's development comes at a critical moment for Russia's domestic aviation sector, which is facing hurdles as a result of Western sanctions imposed in response to the invasion of Ukraine. Sanctions, notably on leasing planes to Russia, have resulted in the nation losing a substantial number of commercial aircraft. To remedy this, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed legislation allowing Russian airlines to seize and re-register leased aircraft in Russia.

The launch of the IL-96-400M is a deliberate step by Russia to lessen dependency on Western aircraft manufacturers. Russia intends to expand its domestic aviation capabilities despite limited access to components for planes manufactured by Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier, and Embraer. In the face of increasing challenges in maintaining airworthy fleets due to Western sanctions, the new widebody passenger jet is proposed as a feasible option.

According to reports, Russia is contemplating marketing the IL-96-400M to nations such as India and China. The widebody passenger jet may be constructed domestically with knowledge transfer, making it an appealing option for countries looking to improve their aviation capabilities. India, in particular, has had difficulties in building local manufacturing units with Airbus and Boeing.
