The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) may have fallen victim to a Wide array Data leak triggered by threat actors or cybercriminals. This might be the outcome of repeated cyber-attack attempts that the council has been aware of since February.

It is believed to be the largest data breach in the country to date, according to News18, who added that the 'threat actor' claimed the data — derived from residents' COVID-19 exam information — was obtained from the ICMR.

Given the gravity of the occurrence, India's main investigative agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), is expected to look into it once the ICMR lodges a complaint.

According to the study, a 'threat actor' with the username X, formerly Twitter, offered the database in the compromised forum on the dark web, which includes details of 81.5 million Indian people' Aadhaar and passport information, as well as names, phone numbers, and addresses.

According to the report, CERT-In alerted ICMR about the breach and verified that the sample data for sale matched the genuine data of ICMR, following which all agencies were notified.

To control the damage, corrective actions have been made and the necessary SoP has been deployed.
According to sources, the epicentre of the leak has not been established because portions of the COVID-19 test data are sent to the National Informatics Centre (NIC), the ICMR, and the Ministry of Health.

According to Resecurity, an American cyber security and intelligence outfit that discovered the breach, a threat actor using the pseudonym 'pwn0001' made a discussion on Breach Forums on October 9, brokering access to 815 million "Indian Citizen Aadhaar & Passport" details.

To put this victim group in context, India's total population is little over 1.486 billion people, according to the research.
