Jr NTR has been winning hearts with his stellar filmography over the years. Adding another feather to his decorated hat, the RRR actor has been inducted into the Actor’s Branch of the Academy. This is a proud moment for Indian cinema. This recognition comes in the wake of the success of "RRR" at the international box office and at the Oscars, where the SS Rajamouli directorial won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, "Naatu Naatu".
This came after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences dropped a list of the new member class of actors. The list includes Jr NTR who featured in SS Rajamouli’s RRR which made history at the Oscars 2023. Other actors who made the list are Everything Everywhere All At Once star Ke Huy Quan and The Banshees of Inisherin fame Kerry Condon.
The announcement reads, “In the capable hands of these dedicated and gifted performers, stories transcend the confines of imagination, taking on a tangible, visceral existence that captivates viewers around the world. Through their nuanced expressions, compelling gestures, and authentic portrayals, they bridge the gap between fiction and reality, allowing us to see ourselves in the struggles, joys, and triumphs of the characters they bring to life. The Academy is thrilled to welcome Ke Huy Quan, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Kerry Condon, N.T. Rama Rao Jr., and Rosa Salazar to the Actors Branch.”
But what does it mean?
According to the Oscars' official page, membership to the Actors Branch is by invitation of the Board of Governors. Invitations to active membership are limited to those people who are active in the motion picture arts and sciences, or even credited with screen achievements. It also states that those actors who have achieved distinction in the motion picture arts and sciences and who, in the opinion of the Board, are qualified for membership.
The page also lists down three criteria for actors to be considered for invitation to membership in the Actors Branch of the Academy. It lists that the person must 'have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a calibre that reflects the high standards of the Academy.'
It also mentions that actors have to be nominated for an Academy Award in one of the acting categories. In Jr NTR's case, as the actor is not an Oscar nominee, he falls under the third category that states, the person must 'have, in the judgment of the Actors Branch Executive Committee, otherwise achieved unique distinction, earned special merit or made an outstanding contribution as a motion picture actor.'
It’s worth noting that Jr. NTR’s movie, “RRR,” won award for Best Original Song for "Naatu Naatu", at this year’s 80th Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles.
Jr. NTR will next be seen in Devara alongside Janhvi Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan.
