India's first queen who actively opposed oppresive British rule, Velu Nachiyar, is a warrior queen who established her all women army and gave the British a tough time.
Velu Nachiyar was princess of the Ramnad kingdom. The only daughter to the royal couple, Velu Nachiyar was raised equal to a male heir. She was trained in methods of combat.
After the British soldiers, allied with the son of Nawab of Arcot conquered Sivaganga and killed her husband, Velu Nachiyar fled with her daughter to build her army of women, known as 'Udaiyaal'.
In 1780, she waged a war against the British and emerged victorious.
