US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday (Aug 3) said that she came to Taiwan as she seeks "peace for the region" after her visit irked China and started its diplomatic games. Pelosi said during the meeting with Tsai Chi-chang, the deputy speaker of Taiwan's parliament that "We come in friendship to Taiwan, we come in peace for the region."

Pelosi's plane touched down in Taiwan amid a heightened security threat from China. Meanwhile, China on Tuesday (Aug 2) firmly opposed the US House Speaker's Taiwan visit while calling the trip a serious violation of the one-China principle and the provisions of the joint communique signed between the two countries.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a statement against Pelosi's visit saying, "On 2 August, in disregard of China's strong opposition and serious representations, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited China's Taiwan region. This is a serious violation of the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiques." Beijing said the visit gravely undermines peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and sends a seriously wrong signal to the "separatist forces for Taiwan independence".

The Chinese ministry further said in its statement, "The Taiwan question is the most important and most sensitive issue at the very heart of China-US relations. The Taiwan Strait is facing a new round of tensions and severe challenges, and the fundamental cause is the repeated moves by the Taiwan authorities and the United States to change the status quo."

Despite China's warning, US House Speaker arrived in Taipei on Tuesday (Aug 2) night and said that the trip in no way contradicts longstanding United States policy on the self-governed island. During the press conference, over the US-Taiwan economic cooperation, Pelosi said that her new US legislation aimed at strengthening the American chip industry in Taiwan which will compete with China.

In a typical American diplomacy, although the purpose of her visit was very much clear, Pelosi the ongoing 'climate crisis' as the first subject of her visit. Something that even an amateur in international diplomacy would recognize that certainly was not the purpose of her visit. She later on adds other points to be the purpose of her visit, creating a wide spectrum of purposes of a US House Speaker to be in Taiwan, during critical times, taking the world to the edge of World War III, as to what the people around the world are concerned with.

Pelosi said, "Now we look forward to our conversation about how we can work together to save the planet from the climate crisis. We thank you for your leadership and we want the world to recognize it. Our visit was about human rights, unfair trade practices, security issues." Pelosi further said that she is here to listen and learn from Taiwanese people as to how can they come together.

She also congratulated Taiwan for addressing the issue of COVID. The US House Speaker said, "We congratulate you on successfully addressing the issue of COVID, which is also an issue of health, economy, security and governance." Taking to Twitter, upon her arrival, Pelosi said, "Our Congressional delegation's visit to Taiwan honours America's unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan's vibrant Democracy." Pelosi also expressed US solidarity with 23 million people of Taiwan in the face of the increasing threat from China. She also further tried to clear it out saying;

"Our visit is part of our broader trip to the Indo-Pacific -- including Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan -- focused on mutual security, economic partnership and democratic governance. Our discussions with Taiwan leadership will focus on reaffirming our support for our partner and on promoting our shared interests, including advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific region."

Washington's mediation in a conflicted region during times when it can push the circumstances from worse to worst is an old chapter of American diplomacy. Besides, their is justified history as to why Pelosi's visit made the world go anxious about a 'World War III'. When it comes to wars, there are varied perspectives that exist about the circumstances that lead to the loss. The same is about World War I. The entry of US in WWI, according to US historians, is because Germany provoked America into the European war, turning it into a world war.

According to the US perspective, German submarines sank three U.S. merchant ships during Mar 16 – 18 with heavy loss of life. US President Woodrow Wilson thus was forced to make the decision on Mar 20 for the United States to declare war on Germany. On April 2, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson went before a joint session of Congress to request a declaration of war against Germany.

However, according to the German perspective, since the European region was a well declared battlefield and that when Germany had warned every other nation that any sea vessel that will be observed around North Atlantic will be fired at, considering security concerns, at such times, was it not clear to the USA to not send any vessels in the region. Or were the passengers who lost their lives during the German attack on the American vessels, merely, a sacrifice made to find a justified reason to enter the war.

The current situation in Taiwan is much similar to what happened in WWI. Just like any other war or conflict, multiple explanations exist as to why Nancy Pelosi decided to visit Taiwan during such crucial times. Although the Congress Woman expresses her country's concern for the Indo Pacific and thus tries to further justify her visit to Taiwan, the same principle goes in vain when it comes to the crisis in Sri Lanka, because even though the island country is in chaos that is linked to China and is located undoubtedly in the Indo pacific region, US clearly volunteered to take no call on the humanitarian crisis there. Again, is US going to lead the world to yet another World War, this is exactly why, netizens are raising the big question.
