Yangon, Aug 27: Myanmar authorities have recently detained the United Kingdom's Former ambassador to the country. Vicky Bowman was taken into custody along with her husband, on Wednesday night, as per the media reports.
United Kingdom's Former ambassador to Myanmar, Vicky Bowman was recently detained in the South East Asian country that is presently under military Junta rule. However, Myanmar's military govt has not announced the detentions. According to the local and international media outlets, Former Ambassador Bowman could have been charged under the country's Immigration Act.
A UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said on Thursday (Aug 25) the British govt is "concerned" by the arrest of a "British woman" in Myanmar. "We are in contact with the local authorities and are providing consular assistance," the spokesperson said.
Bowman served as the UK's top diplomat in Myanmar from 2002 to 2006 and has since remained in the country as the founder of the non-government organization Myanmar Center for Responsible Business. On Wednesday (Aug 24) the United Kingdom had announced a fresh round of sanctions targeting businesses linked to Myanmar's junta.
