After Lal Singh Chadha and Darlings now viewers have decided to Boycott Tapsi Pannu and Anurag Kashyap’s latest Movie Dobara. In an interview when they both were asked about this Boycott trend that is going on Anurag Kashyap Said, “People are boycotting movies because they don’t have money to watch the movies, as there is GST applicable on even food items like paneer how can theta afford a movie?” And next to that Tapasi and Anurag both said, “Please go and boycott our movie, hame koi farak nahi padta”. Taking the audience for granted was a big mistake they did, on the first day of Dobara, some shows had been canceled because of low sales. Indians have taken this BOYCOTTING very seriously and there are some major reasons behind that.
The boycotting trend has been there for ages. However, it took the limelight from Padmavat where Karni Sena was against this movie and how they have projected Rani Padmini. Then it again got viral when Deepika Padukone supported students from JNU Viewers who were against this hypocrisy and they decided to boycott Chhapak. And since then this trend is evergreen. Are they boycotting every movie? NO. Movies like URI, Kashmir Files, 83, RRR, etc were such a super hit because of the way they presented the story.
So here is the reason why some movies are getting BOYCOTT and some are winning the hearts.
1. The mindset of Indian Viewers have been changed over time: Earlier we were the soft target to put any agenda in our heads. It was slow poisoning. Take movies where Rahim chacha has always been a good guy, where selective secularism was there and we kept mum. Where Sarfaraz was the good one, and he was being targeted because he was Muslim. Take these examples, and see how the slow poisoning was happening. But now we are more aware of these political agendas and how through content a few people from the industry wants to play with our minds. And thus we know which movie to watch and which to Boycott.
2. Won’t tolerate the abuse regarding Hindu religion anymore: Earlier it was easy to target Hindu Community as they are quiet people and never take action. Take PK for example where Hindu gods were projected badly and creators made fun of them. Or take OMG as an example where they bluntly insulted Hindu beliefs and gods. The question is if a similar thing would have been shown with another religion like Islam or Christians would they tolerate it? Do we know what would have happened then?
3. Selective secularism: Indian viewers are tired of watching selective secularism on screen. Take Haider as an example where sympathizing with Islamic terrorism was okay. Take My name is Khan and New York as an example where it has been shown how because of terrorism the Muslims are being targeted and because of the torcher they are embracing terrorism shamelessly. They have always shown villains wearing tilak and doing Pooja, Take Vastav or Karan Arjun as an example, and they have always shown Muslims as a good men. Take Sholey, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, or Sooryavanshi as an example where Muslims are doing Ganesh Pooja, in reality, was it possible? We are sick of Selective secularism now. So we decide to boycott.
4. Attitude of these stars: Look at what Kareena Kapoor Khan said in an interview “Who has forced you to watch our movies if you don’t want mat Jao dekhne” And people took it seriously. The same thing happened with Tapasi and Anurag Kashyap. Aamir khan talks about how his wife feels insecure in India. These people make anti-national statements, take their audience for granted, and expect that still, we will behave like a fool and will watch their movies. How and Why? Should we do that? The attitude of these stars is rude, and they take their viewers for granted, so viewers have decided to ditch them and boycott their movies so that next time they will be cautious before making any statement.
People watched RRR and praised it like anything because The way they have shown “Kodand Dhari Ram” and true patriotism won our hearts, and the way they have shown what an Adivasi Gond can do for his country is commendable. And that’s why Indian viewers are more inclined towards movies like RRR and Kashmir Files which either appreciate the culture or show the brutal truth as it is, without any filter or agenda behind it.
These are the reasons that now only now, but in the future too this Boycott Trend will be there and it will cause a lot of pain for these selective actors and directors in the industry.
