In the last 5+ years, Indian cinema has changed a lot. Keeping Covid times in mind, it had to happen however, the post-Bahubali Indian audience is switching towards South Indian cinema more than Bollywood. And no it’s not we who are claiming this, but it's a recent survey report that said the same. And why we need the survey to tell us this, look at the movies like KGF 1 &2, RRR, and Pushpa and look at their box office collections, it speaks a lot about changing taste of the Indian audience.
In a recent episode of Koffee With Karan season, 7 Karan Johar called Vijay Devarakonda and in another episode Samantha Prabhu as his guests, and before that, in the last season, he called SS. Rajamouli, Prabhas, and Rana Daggubati as his guests, which never happened before. Karan’s show was all about Bollywood and rich Bollywood stars. Now that these films are making more money and fame, Karan has started calling South Indian stars on his most talked ‘talk show.’
Now the question is why? Why do people are preferring South Indian cinema more than Bollywood?
Here are 6 reasons why Bollywood is no more old Bollywood now and people are preferring to watch South Indian cinema.
1. Larger-than-life movies: If you see SS. Rajamouli movies like Bahubali and RRR you will understand what Larger than life actually means. Their heroes are superheroes, their action is out of the world and their entire vibe is larger than life. And that is the major missing point in today’s Bollywood movies. Take Jug Jug Jiyo or Bhulbhulaiya 2 or even the upcoming movie Brahmastra for that matter, the Vibe RRR or Bahubali gave the entire nation these movies are somewhere missing that vibe.
2. No religion appeasement: Majorly South Indian Movies are ‘No religion appeasement’ movies. Where they do not set a narrative for particular religious appeasement. Take RRR as an example. They showed “Kodand Dhari Ram” with pride. At the same time showing how beautiful culture the “Gond” Adivasi jati has. This is the kind of movie as a viewer we want to watch. We are tired of watching Rahim Chacha becoming the Messiah for the world. Enough of religious appeasement.
3. No Political Pressure movies: Again take RRR as an example. They showed the struggle of freedom fighters and it was a tight slap on “De di hame azadi bina khadg bina dhal”. They actually showed who was behind India’s freedom. They paid tribute as well, fearlessly without taking other names. (Those who know, know). There are many examples like these. The movies are made for the masses and all can feel the core feeling behind these movies.
4. Movies made for masses, not for classes: Indian viewer is now tired of watching rich people's problems movies like Student of the year and Jug Jug Jiyo. These movies are made for the masses. Take KGF as an example or Mahanati or even the 2009 film Magdheera. These movies are made for the masses and not for classes. And that’s what hits when it comes to the Indian Audience.
5. Vision: In an interview SS. Rajamouli said that he was very clear from day one about the Vision of his movies like Bahubali and RRR. He said If we are putting this much money we surely expect that it will pay back for our Vision. Because more than the money Vision of the film matters. Well, he said it right. The Vision that these directors like Rajamouli, Sukumar, Prashanth Neel, and Maniratnam has, it is somewhere lacking in Bollywood and we can see that from the films that are coming on celluloid these days.
6. Market: The language barrier is the biggest hurdle when it comes to Bollywood Hindi movies. Hindi movies will have to think about how to expand their market, especially in south India which has close to half the exhibition screens in India. The reason being even the highest collection for the Hindi movie Dangal was approx Rs 375 crore and insignificant in any of the southern markets. This is the Achilles' heel for Hindi movies since they will have to come up with options to boost their box office numbers in southern markets. Southern movies have made a smooth transition to the north of India, vice versa cannot be said of Hindi movies making a dent in the south.
These are the primary 6 reasons why Bollywood is taking a back step and South Industry is taking a lead. What do you think about this? Let us know in the comments below.
