Guwahati, Jul 25: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday (Jul 25) confirmed having a conversation with Opposition candidate for Vice Presidential polls, Margaret Alva. Alva had reached out to the chief ministers of various states as part of her campaign.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said he 'politely' told Opposition candidate for Vice Presidential polls, Margaret Alva that he has 'no role' in the election of the Vice President. Sarma's remarks came after Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said that Alva's conversations with the chief ministers of Assam, Karnataka and Delhi were "very cordial and friendly".
Ramesh had tweeted, "Smt. Margaret Alva took charge of her campaign office at 1, Pt Ravi Shankar Shukla Lane today. She spoke to CM Assam, CM Karnataka, and CM Delhi as part of her Vice Presidential campaign. The conversations were very cordial & friendly given her long political career & associations."
Responding to his tweet, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, "Smt. Margaret Alva spoke to me this morning. I politely told her that I'm not a member of the electoral college. As such I have no role in the election of Vice President of India." Sarma had quoted the Congress leader's tweet.
The Indian Vice President is elected by the electoral college consisting of the MPs of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha which is in accordance with the system of proportional representation. Only the members of the Parliament are eligible to vote in this election while the chief ministers of the states are ineligible to cast their votes, unlike the Presidential elections in which the MLAs cast their votes via secret ballots.
