New Delhi, Jul 22: India witnessed the victory of Draupadi Murmu as its 15th President and the country got its first Tribal and second woman President. The tussle for the position that was between NDA candidate Draupadi Murmu and Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha, proved to be in favor of Murmu, late evening on Jul 21.
According to the analysis made before the election, Draupadi Murmu was already expected to have 60 pc of the votes in her favor. Odisha ruling party Biju Janta Dal was among the first to extend support to the NDA candidate. Shiv Sena, the former NDA partner from Maharashtra, had decided to back Murmu for the Presidential election, confirming that it is doing so without any pressure. The ruling YSR Congress in Andhra Pradesh had pledged its support to Murmu. The opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) had also announced that it will back the NDA nominee.
The lone MLA of Jana Sena, who had virtually defected to the YSRC, had promised to vote along. In effect, all votes from Andhra Pradesh were to go to Murmu. Regional parties like Biju Janata Dal, Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP), Samajwadi Party's ally Om Prakash Rajbhar's party, AIADMK, Janata Dal (Secular), Shiromani Akali Dal have also extended their support to the NDA Presidential candidate.
After the elections concluded with a counting process that continued for more than 10 hours, the returning officer P C Mody declared Draupadi Murmu as the winner and said that she received 6,76,803 votes against Sinha's 3,80,177 votes. After the third round of counting concluded, the Returning officer had already announced that she had received over 53 pc of the total valid votes.
As per the analysis done prior to the election, Draupadi Murmu received all the voted from Andhra Pradesh and others others among the ones with most votes were Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jharkhand. Votes from these states, both NDA allies and from the opposition, had promised their support for Murmu based on her aspect of 'Daughter of the soil' and her 'tribal connect'.
In fact her selection as an NDA candidate for the Presidential position, is expected to further avail the party with crucial votes of the ST community in upcoming assembly elections in Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, with significant tribal population, as well as the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
With a legendary victory, Draupadi Murmu has scripted new chapter in the political history of India and provided the Santhals with a new crown that will shine endlessly in Indian history. The 15th President of India, Draupadi Murmu will take her Presidential oath on Jul 25, with the former President Ram Nath Kovind's tenure completing on Jul 24.
