Draupadi Murmu is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA)’s nominee for the July 18 presidential election while the opposition has fielded Yashwant Sinha for the upcoming polls. However, Murmu has gained a lot of support from political parties including from the Opposition party's allies. Though both the candidates have a vast political portfolio and massive influence, it is being speculated that the vote will be one-sided, favoring Murmu because the majority of the political parties that are a part of the assembly have come out in support of Draupadi Murmu.
This is mainly because they are determined to make her the first tribal president of India. Meanwhile, the opposition parties have shown clear support for Yashwant Sinha, but lack a majority.
There were some surprising elements as over the past few weeks, the NDA candidate received support from numerous parties who are part of the United Progressive Alliance. Shiv Sena, the former NDA partner and currently which is in allaince with Nationalist Congress Party and Indian National Congress, has decided to back Murmu. Extending its support to her, former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray said Shiv Sena announced its support for Murmu without any pressure.
Similarly, Andhra Pradesh’s ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and rival Telegu Desam Party, also agreed on Murmu’s nomination. The lone MLA of Jana Sena, who has virtually defected to the YSRC, will also vote along. In effect, all votes from Andhra Pradesh will go to Murmu.
JMM being an ally of the Indian National Congress, extended its support to the presidential candidate after she visited Jharkhand seeking the party’s support. “For the first time after Independence, a tribal woman is going to get the distinction of becoming the President. Therefore, after due deliberation, the party decides to vote in favour of Ms. Droupadi Murmu,” said JMM chief Shibu Soren.
Likewise, Punjab’s Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), having two MPs in the Lok Sabha and three MLAs in Punjab also extended their support to Murmu in early July when BJP president JP Nadda reached out to the party president Sukhbir Singh Badal to support NDA’s nomination. With this support, it is speculated that the vote share of NDA nominee Draupadi Murmu has already crossed 60 percent.
