Amid growing shortage, Sri Lanka PM Wickremesinghe urges citizens to use gas, fuel sparingly

Colombo, Jun 7: The next three weeks for Sri Lanka would be tough as the nation is facing a severe economic crisis, said Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Tuesday (Jun 7) while urging citizens to use fuel and gas sparingly.

 

 

 

 

The PM was speaking at the Sri Lankan Parliament where he said that his govt's main priority was economic stability and this could be achieved only by implementing intelligently thought - out projects through hard work and dedication. He said Sri Lanka spends USD 500 million per month on fuel and also requires USD 40 million a month to import gas.

 

 

 

 

 

Sri Lanka PM Wickremesinghe said, "The next three weeks will be a tough time for us in regards of fuel. It is time we all must use fuel and gas carefully. Unessential travel should be as limited as possible. Therefore, I urge all citizens to refrain from thinking about hoarding gas and fuel during this period." He further added that, after the challenging period of three weeks, the Sri Lanka govt will try to provide fuel and food without further disruptions and informed that negotiations are underway with various parties regarding the same.

 

He also said that Sri Lanka needs to pay close attention to its foreign relations to rally more international support as the country was becoming marginalized in the world due to its poor foreign policies. Sri lanka is currently facing its worst ever economic crisis due to a foreign exchange shortage.
