Sri Lanka refugees at Rameshwaram: Q Branch Police probe underway

Colombo, Jun 27: While the island country is undergoing a severe economic crisis, two refugees from Sri Lanka were recently found on Rameshwaram each, in Tamil Nadu. The incident comes when several Sri Lankan citizens are fleeing the country due to the crisis. Tamil Nadu police is presently investigating the incident.

Q Branch, one of the CID wings of Tamil Nadu police, reported, "Two Sri Lankan refugees who arrived at the Gothandaramar Temple beach in Rameshwaram island are being investigated." Rameshwaram is the closest Indian city to Sri Lanka and the closest point to reach India. Considering the worsening conditions in Sri Lanka due to the economic crisis, several Sri Lankans are attempting to flee the island nation.

Earlier in March, three Sri Lankan Tamils were booked under various sections of the Indian Passport Rule and the Foreigners Act and remanded custody following a Rameshwaram Court order.
 
 
Tamils who have no way to survive due to shortage of food, and high inflation following the economic crisis in Sri Lanka are preparing to leave the island nation and enter India as refugees. In similar situation, the first group of six Sri Lankan Tamils, including three children from Kokkupidiyan from Mannar, next to the Sri Lankan Chilawathurai, came in a mysterious boat Pesalai and got stuck in a sand dune islet near Dhanushkodi. They were rescued by the Indian Coast Guard.
