Nearly one month after the Karnataka high courts delivered the verdict on Hijab, the Hijab controversy has once again resurfaced in Karnataka, after some Muslim students of the Mangaluru university came to class wearing the Hijab.
Opposing the Muslim girls, several students of the university staged a flash protest near the college against Muslim girls who came to the classroom wearing the hijab. As per the students, nearly 40 Muslim students attended classes while wearing Hijab.
The students demanded to not allow the girl students, inside the college, if they are wearing the hijab. They have stated that they would continue protesting until the Muslim students remove their hijabs or are sent out. Protesting students said that they would not attend classes until the matter was resolved.
They have also demanded that the College Development Committee (CDC) should meet immediately and tell the students once and for all that hijabs won’t be allowed inside the campus.
The Karnataka High Court bench of Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, and Justices JM Khazi and Krishna Dixit, on Tuesday, March 15, ruled that wearing a hijab was not an essential part of Islam. The bench said, “We are of the considered opinion that the wearing of the hijab by Muslim women does not form a part of the essential religious practice in the Islamic faith.”
The ruling also said, “The government has the power to issue an order banning clothes that could disturb the peace, harmony and public order and no case is made for its invalidation.”
