It seems like it never rains but it pours for Congress, as the political crisis of the party has deepened with many leaders and prime faces of the party, including Hardik Patel, leaving the grand old party. Adding to the name to the list, one of the party's "G-23" leaders and former union minister, Kapil Sibal, gave a blow to the party and submitted his resignation to the party president.

Minutes after making an announcement of his resignation, he filed a nomination for the Rajya Sabha election, in the presence of Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav.

"I have resigned from Congress. We want to make an alliance while staying in the Opposition. I will be with Samajwadi Party and point out Modi Government's drawbacks," he stated.

Akhilesh Yadav confirmed to the media that Kapil Sibal has filed his nomination for Rajya Sabha with Samajwadi Party support. "Sibal is an eminent lawyer and has a political career. He had effectively put and discussed important issues in Lok Sabha, and Rajya Sabha. The country has many issues facing it and I hope that he will effectively put issues in the Rajya Sabha," Yadav said.

It should be noted that Sibal is believed to share a warm relationship with many SP leaders, including Akhilesh Yadav and Azam Khan. Sibal had argued in January 2017 (during the Yadav family feud) at the Election Commission that Akhilesh Yadav should get the 'Bicycle' symbol. And eventually, Akhilesh got the symbol.
