New Delhi, April 12: Denying any major relief to the Sharjeel Imam, the Delhi court has again dismissed the bail application of a former JNU student in a case related to the alleged conspiracy behind the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots. Imam has been booked under the stringent unlawful activities act.
Special judge Amitab Rawat has pronounced the judgment after hearing the arguments made by Advocate Tanveer Ahmed Mir appearing on behalf of Sharjeel Imam. Special Public Prosecutor Amit Prasad appeared for the prosecution.
During the hearing, Rawat noted that the four protected witnesses’ statements have to be taken at face value at this stage of deciding the bail application. The protected witnesses have claimed that Imam made provocative speeches asking for Shaheen Baghs to be created across the country, asked for the overthrow of the government, and called for chakka jams across the country.
It should be noted that Imam is accused of making inflammatory speeches against the government on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizens (NRC) at Jamia Milia Islamia University. As per the Delhi police, his speech promoted enmity between people that led to riots in the Jamia Millia Islamia University area.
