Disturbed areas under AFSPA lessened in Assam, Nagaland and Manipur

New Delhi, Apr 1 : According to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's recent announcement, the Central govt will soon be reducing disturbed areas under the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) in the states of Assam, Nagaland and Manipur.
Through a series of tweets, Union Home Minister Amit Shah made the news public by stating, "In a significant step, GoI under the decisive leadership of PM Shri Ji, has decided to reduce disturbed areas under Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the states of Nagaland, Assam and Manipur after decades."
While addressing the press, the Minister said that the decision was taken in line with the developments taking place in North East regarding security and putting check on the prevailing insurgency in the region. In another tweet, Shah mentioned, "Thanks to PM Narendra Modi Ji’s unwavering commitment, our North-Eastern region, which was neglected for decades is now witnessing a new era of peace, prosperity and unprecedented development. I congratulate the people of North East on this momentous occassion."
Making it more clear, the Union Home Ministry reported that the decision to reduce the disturbed areas in Assam, Nagaland and Manipur will come in effect from Apr 1 and will be effective in considerable regions. However, the act has not been completely revoked from the region.
The entire state of Assam was subject to the act since 1990, where 23 districts will be subject to the recent decision. In case of Manipur, the entire state except for Imphal Municipalty Area, is subject to the act since 2004. From Apr 1, Manipur's 15 police station areas of 6 districts will be eased off the act. However, in case of Nagaland, based on the recommendations provided by the committee constituted solely for the same purpose, the decision of reduction will be executed in phases for selected 15 police station areas in 7 districts.
