We Require a Kick to Act

Why do we require a kick to act. It is a fact that we generally follow the route of inertia to act and need a kick start. We need to get up and change that.

I was going from Delhi to Chandigarh by flight on 06 Jan 2017. It was supposed to take off at 11 AM but was delayed by four hours. The announcement by the airlines staff was made in two shifts. People were sitting quietly. By around 12.30 PM or so, I discussed with fellow passengers about the requirement of lunch to be served by Airlines. Nobody was ready to take the initiative for the simple reason of inertia accentuated by the expectancy of getting a NO from airlines staff. I cajoled one of the young guys who was travelling with me to approach the Airlines staff. He went to them with little expectation and came back disappointed as he expected. By around 1.30 PM, I decided to take control, took this young guy with me and approached the Airlines Staff, who refused again, prompting me to be bit firm with them as a customer and told him that two of the passengers were diabetic and if anything goes wrong with them, they will be responsible.

There was a bit of ripple but not to the desired extent because they were not sure if diabetic passengers claim was really authentic.

“Who is your boss here”, I asked.

“Sir, I am the boss.” –was the reply.

“You cannot be boss because you are not giving any favourable decision for customers who are right in their own way. You cannot be indifferent to passengers because each one of them will carry a poor impression about your company, obviously they will not fly again with your Airlines. Boss cannot be oblivious of this fact, so you are not the boss by appointment and more so by your poor decision-making capability”, I said.

By this time, all the passengers were around me and all the airlines ground staff was around that so called Boss.

He apologized for not passing the instructions on his own since flight was delayed and it was lunch time.

All the passengers walked across to enjoy good lunch, each one thanked me.

The young man who went before me to request the airlines staff for Lunch, asked me “Why did they not accept my request for providing the lunch to passengers”.

My answer was very simple "Because, you never expected them to accede to your request”.

“Were you more aggressive with them?” he questioned.

“No, I was just firm but option was with me to be aggressive and they could know this with just my positive body language”.

I was just enjoying my macho feeling when this young man shot off a bouncer “Tell me one thing, why did you not go to airlines staff and cajoled me to go, you could have gone ab-initio”

Well, I did not have a convincing answer so I just answered “I also required a kick to act”.

We had a hearty laugh.

This is my question to all of us “Why do we require a kick to act”. It is a fact that we generally follow the route of inertia to act and kick is required even for leaders (?). Secondly, merely attending Leadership lessons will not do, we need to follow this on ground, on daily basis in our daily life.

All things are bright and beautiful.
