Chennai, Feb 4: Fearing that the truth will come out in M Lavnya's force conversion matter, the M.K Stalin-led Tamil Nadu government has knocked the doors of the Supreme Court against Madras High Court’s order to transfer the Thanjavur student suicide case to the CBI.

SC

In the filed petition, the Director-General of Police of Tamil Nadu has sought a stay of the order passed by a single bench of Justice GR Swaminathan while arguing that there were no circumstances warranting the transfer of the investigation from the state police. Moreover, the state govt has also sought the expunction of certain adverse remarks made by the High Court against the probe by state police.

As per the petition, the State has challenged all the interim orders including orders dated 21st, 22nd, 24th January 2022 on the ground that they interfered with the investigation.

On 31st January, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has ordered that the probe into the girl suicide matter will be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The order came on the plea filed by the girl's father.

However, it should be noted that the father of the victim girl has already filed a caveat in the Supreme Court in connection with the Madras High Court Madurai bench order which transferred the probe of the case to CBI.

It should be reminded that M Lavanya, a student of standard 12th in Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, had committed suicide after she was allegedly tortured by her school authorities for refusing to convert to Christianity. Before dying, she gave her dying declaration, in which she alleged that her school was pressurising her to convert to Christianity, and had tortured her for refusing to leave Hinduism.

However, local police have, tried to play down the conversion angle in the case and have mentioned mental torture as the reason behind Lavanya's suicide in its status report submitted before the court.
