It seems like, the DMK government has misused its power as the Tamil Nadu Police arrested 35 Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) functionaries, including national secretary Nidhi Tripathi, for demanding Justice for Lavanya.
It should be noted that ABVP members were staging a protest against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin for allegedly showing 'insensitivity' in Lavanya's suicide case. It was then police arrested them under the non-bailable Section 353 of the IPC (assaulting public servant). The Metropolitan magistrate court in Chennai has been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody.
Talking to media about it Sidharth Yadav, National Media Convener and Delhi State Secretary of the ABVP, said, 'They have been falsely charged with Section 353 IPC - assault on a public servant, which is a non-bailable offense. The protest was peaceful and not even a scratch was made by any student as evident in the videos."
This week, giving a major blow to the DMK govt, the Supreme Court has refused to interfere with the Madras High Court’s decision in the Lavanya suicide case. The Supreme Court also asked the Tamil Nadu government not to make the matter a matter of prestige. The Tamil Nadu government had challenged the Madras High Court’s decision in the Supreme Court ordering a CBI inquiry into the Lavanya suicide case.
