New Delhi, December 17: While responding to the question in Loksabha, the Central government informed the lower house that the Executive Committee has approved the names of Veer Savarkar, Swami Vivekanandan, Sardar Patel and late former Union Minister Sushma Swaraj for the colleges and centres to be started under Delhi University.
Besides that, the committee is also considering the names of former Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihar Vajpayee, Arun Jaitley, Amartya Sen, and Savitri Bai Phule. As per the government, the decision was taken by the Academic Council which met in August.
“The Council also suggested considering the names of Atal Bihari Bajpai, Savitri Bai Phule, Arun Jaitley, Choudhary Brahm Prakash, C.D. Deshmukh and Prof. Amartya Sen and resolved that the Vice-Chancellor be authorized to finalize the name,” states the response.
The govt also informed that there is a proposal to give the names of Amartya Sen and others and the final decision will be taken by the Vice-Chancellor. The minister said that there was no protest at Delhi University regarding the naming.
The education minister was responding to the question raised by the Congress MP from Kerala, Kodikunnil Suresh. He asked if the government proposes to revisit the “policy of naming colleges after individuals with contested legacies” or “promulgate a standard benchmark for the process with Standard operating Procedure to avoid supra-policy decisions by the executive councils of universities”.
