10 years ago on 16th December 2012, the entire nation was in shock. Something horrific has happened in India’s Capital Delhi. A heinous rape happened to an innocent girl, who was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Her mistake was she took a bus with her friend at 8:30 PM in Delhi. That was her only fault. And still, after 10 years, after so many debates and controversies, conversations, and law amendments the question remains the same, are girls safe in Delhi?

Nirbhaya rape case

2 Days back in Delhi’s prominent Dwarka area 2 men threw acid on a 17-year-old girl's face. Her both eyes are damaged and her face is burnt. She will suffer for life. Crime is different but motive, way, and intention are the same. To destroy that girl. Even after 10 years, nothing has changed in Delhi.

Today on Twitter #Nirbhaya is trending. People are talking about how in 10 years, more such crimes happened. Do you remember when the documentary on this case came up named as “India’s daughter” it caught a lot of attention at the same time, and it created so much political mess that this documentary got banned from India and is still unavailable on any platform. The question is why? Why are we so scared of telling the truth to the world, and showing the real picture of these criminals, who have no shame in doing such things?

A few days back Shradhha Walkar case came up. Where in the name of Love Jihad and in the hope of 72 Houris (Hoors) A Muslim man named Aftaab Poonawala killed his girlfriend and chopped her off in 35 different pieces. Well, this also happened in Delhi. He used to step out at midnight 2 AM to dispose of, those chopped pieces of Shradhha. (Can’t believe we are talking about a girl here.) and no one even noticed him. Not one single police stopped him, or asked him what is doing, or where is he going. Shradhha was missing for a good 4-5 months. No one even noticed.

The Nirbhaya case brought reforms, and stricter rape laws, no doubt. But still, there is no fear in such criminal minds, that if they would perform such a crime, something horrifying can happen to them. Because all we saw was trials, trials, long trials, and then juvenile criminals getting freed all because of their age.

In the last 10 years, so many cases have happened. Priyanka Reddy's Rape case is one such. Where all the criminals were killed in an encounter. Now that also caught a lot of attention and so many questions were raised on the encounter, such as is it is the legal and right way to deal with criminals. A common man is asking then what is the right way? If Law can’t take quicker action, police should not kill them in an encounter then what should have been done? Years of trials and late justice? As they say, Justice delayed is justice denied. What should be done? On Twitter, common people are asking questions like “Now shall people should take the law into their hands, and if that is so, will that not create a huge social mess?”

So many questions and no logical answer to them. Even after a decade, girls do not feel safe traveling alone, taking a bus, or even walking on streets at 7:30 in the morning just like that, because anyone can molest them, throw acid on them or chop them off in pieces. When are we going to change this world for girls?
