In 2001, India's parliament was attacked by two Pakistan-based terrorist groups Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) on December 13. The attack had left the entire nation aghast and further strained the relationship between the two neighbouring countries. As India marked 21 years of the cowardly terror attack, let us take a look back on what happened that day

When Parliament was attacked on 13 December, 2001
 
 
1.Around 11:40 am, five terrorists entered the Parliament House Complex in an Ambassador car that had forged a home ministry pass using a fake identity sticker.


2.Both the houses of the parliament were adjourned 40 minutes before the terror attack started.
 

3.At the time of the attack, several MPs, ministers, officials and other staff members had not left the parliament complex

There were about 100 members of parliament in the building at the time of the attack, although no one was hurt.
 

5.As the car moved towards Building Gate No. 12, a member of the Parliament House Watch and Ward Staff got suspicious.
 

6.The car was then forced to turn back, but it hit then Vice President Krishan Kant’s vehicle. The terrorists, armed with AK-47s and grenades, then got down and opened fire while an alarm was raised, and all the building gates were closed.
 

7.A gunfight between security personnel and the terrorists ensued which lasted for more than 30 minutes in the parliament complex.

The terrorists could not enter the parliament building as all five terrorists were killed outside the parliament.
 

9.In total ten people died in the terror attack. In the attack, five security personnel of Delhi Police, one lady constable of the CRPF and two security assistants of Parliament Watch and Ward section, a gardener and a photojournalist lost their lives.

At least 15 other people were injured in the attack but the 100 or so ministers and MPs in Parliament at the time were unhurt.

As per the Delhi Police investigation, the names of the five terrorists were: Hamza, Haider alias Tufail, Rana, Ranvijay and Mohammed.

Further investigation identified their Indian as associates as Mohammad Afzal Guru, a former JKLF militant who had surrendered in 1994; his cousin Shaukat Husain Guru, Shaukat’s wife Afsan Guru and S A R Geelani, a lecturer of Arabic at Delhi University.
 

13.On December 29, the court acquitted Afsan and sentenced Geelani, Shaukat and Afzal to death.

Geelani was acquitted for “need of evidence” by the Delhi high court in 2003, a decision upheld by the Supreme Court in 2005 and Shaukat was given 10 years in prison.


15.11 years later in 2013, Afzal Guru was hanged to death and his body was buried in Tihar jail.
