In a surprising event in FIFA World Cup held in Qatar, a fan invaded the pitch with a pride flag and a message on the back of his blue shirt "Respect Iranian women" and in front was "Save Ukraine. The match was briefly interrupted with the referee forced to retrieve the flag.
Now, in a FIFA World Cup that has been in a series of controversies for human rights violations, this act has been marked as "unusual". In a first, a fan was able to get into the pitch with a social message. It seems like the man held up a Pride rainbow flag to protest Qatar's anti-LGBT laws
Qatar’s record around gender and LGBT+ equality has also been in the spotlight. As earlier reported, Qatari law calls for a prison sentence of one to three years for adults convicted of consensual gay or lesbian sex. Crossdressing is also criminalized.
Though World Cup organizers have that anyone, regardless of their sexual orientation, can come “without fear of any sort of repercussions", one of the organizers warned rainbow flags could be confiscated to protect fans from being attacked for promoting gay rights in a region where discrimination runs rampant.
According to the reports, replay of World Cup this match on Fox Sports 1 was missing 32 seconds of game time. At the 50:33 mark of the match, there is an abrupt cut from the players on the field to the back of an Uruguayan player’s head.
