Mumbai, November 24: The decade-long border dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka has flared up again after Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis and K'taka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai got involved in a war of words over the issue.
This started after when Bommai claimed that some villages, reeling from a water crisis, in Maharashtra's Sangli district passed a resolution to merge with Karnataka. However, Devendra Fadnavis said no village has sought a merger with Karnataka recently, and there is no question of any border village "going anywhere".
"These villages had introduced a resolution on the issue of water scarcity in 2012. Presently, none of the villages has introduced any resolution," Fadnavis told reporters in Nagpur.
"Not a single village of Maharashtra will go anywhere," Fadnavis stressed. Basavaraj Bommai responded to Fadnavis in a series of tweets and called the Maharashtra deputy CM's statements "provocative".
"Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has made a provocative statement on the Karnataka-Maharashtra border issue and his dream will never come true. Our government is committed to protecting the state's land, water and borders," Bommai said.
"There is no question of giving up any space in the border districts of Karnataka. Our demand is that the Kannada-speaking areas of Maharashtra like Sollapur and Akkalakote should join Karnataka," he added.
