Finally after long spell of rain , winter has arrived. This is the season people look forward to gain health. We can call it the season of getting fit. Free from harsh summers and rains , many fitness enthusiast are to be found on roads and parks exercising. Winter since ancient times has been famous for its food as well. Every culture in India has got its own set of winter recipes and winter produce.

So in this favourable season to do fitness activities let’s see how one should take care of their diet , since fitness can’t be achieved without diets.

Though it is most ideal season for health activities , it comes with its own set of challenges. Let’s see some common winter problems.

1. Thick air and fog : During winters the air is thick and fog is there. This makes the exercising bit difficult. Winter’s thick air also causes pollutants to stay in the air longer. Since air is thick in the early morning and late night : time preferred by many to exercise , breathing becomes a task and so it is common to feel breathless during workout.

Solution : To warm your body up and breathing normal for workout alongwith a good warm up routine make sure to have a warm drink before you start exercising. Even a glass of warm water will open up your respiratory track for easy breathing.

2. Dehydration : Thanks to winters , we don’t feel thirsty that much. But this doesn’t mean , your body needs less water. And this lack of thirst results in dehydration. Have you noticed the way your skin dries , lips are chapped or blackens and itchy skin , though weather to some extent is responsible for it, hydrating yourself well will definitely help you with it.

3. Infections : Viral infections or weather sickness is at its peak during winters hence one has to take care f their immunity really well to avoid these. Including Vitamin C rich foods in your diet will help a lot. Also during winters one should include foods which are warm in nature like sesame seeds , meat , ginger, eggs, etc.

Some of the ideal foods to include in your winter diet are ;

• Spices and herbs : These are not just warm in nature , but these also help fight infections. These work quickly , giving you instant relief from cold and cough. Including these in your diet in a balanced quantity will help you avoid weather sickness. E.g. Ginger , Cardamom, Cinnamon , Turmeric , Ajwain , etc.
 
• Eggs and Non Veg foods : It is the ideal season to eat all your favorite non vegetarin foods. Since animal foods are warm in nature and also are rich sources of proteins and fats which are quietessential in winters makes these an ideal winter food.
 
• Fats : Dietary fats (good) are required during winters. Some of the good fat sources are eggs, meat , ghee , seeds . Fats are fuel for your body which also keeps it warm.

Things to avoid during winters :

• Cold drinks / Aerated drinks

• Too much of tea / coffee

• Ice creams / other cold desserts

• Cold soups

• Those suffering from respiratory track infections avoid cucumber , curd, limit coriander

• Eating cold salads , instead opt for soups / vegetables only.
