London, Oct 20: UK home secretary Suella Braverman has quit her post amid Britain's political and economic turmoil, saying that she had breached government rules. However, she also cited concerns over the direction of Prime Minister Liz Truss, the government.
The resignation of the 42-year-old minister marks the second departure of a senior minister in PM Liz Truss's Cabinet in less than a week. On October 14, Kwasi Kwarteng was replaced as the finance minister by Jeremy Hunt. Braverman tweeted her letter of resignation.
In the letter, Braverman cited "technical infringement of rules" pertaining to an email she sent to a "trusted parliamentary colleague". She said she had sent a draft written ministerial statement on migration, which was due for publication. "Much of it was briefed to MPs.Nevertheless, it is right for me to go," Braverman wrote to the PM. She said that she reported the matter over official channels as soon as she realized her mistake. "I have made a mistake. I accept responsibility and I resign," she wrote. As PM Truss fights hard amid a spiraling Pound and tumultuous economy — a result of her now-reversed tax-cut policy — Braverman said that she had doubts over the government's direction. "Not only have we broken key pledges that were promised to our voters, but I have serious concerns about this government's commitment to honoring manifesto commitments. such as reducing overall migration numbers and stopping illegal migration," she said. Earlier this month, Suella Braverman said that a trade deal with India would increase migration to the United Kingdom when Indians comprise the "largest group of people who overstay" their visas in the UK. Her remarks came at a time when India and the UK were negotiating a free trade agreement.
Suella Braverman, an Indian-origin British minister, made the remark in an interview for the British weekly magazine 'The Spectator'. Reacting to her statement, the Indian High Commission in the UK said that India had initiated action on all cases raised with it under the Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP). Goa-born Braverman was one of the contenders for the PM's post, the polls for which were held earlier this year.
