Shevchenkivskiy district is a busy hub in Kyiv with universities, student bars, and restaurants. The district was also hit by several explosions on Monday last week in retaliatory strikes by Russia following a blast on a bridge linking Russia to Crimea. The Head of Ukraine's president's staff Andriy Yermak said that the attacks were carried out with suicide drones. Russia has often denied targeting civilians in what it calls its "special military operation" in Ukraine. Social media posts showed a fire in the area of the apparent strike, with black smoke rising. The strike on Kyiv comes as fighting has intensified in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. Ukraine has also continued its counteroffensive in the south near Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.

Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that there was heavy fighting around the cities of Bakhmut and Solar in the Donetsk region. Russia said on Sunday that it was continuing air strikes on military and energy targets in Ukraine.
