Mumbai, Oct 11: With an aiming to deliver justice to Sadhus who were brutally killed in Palghar district, the Maharashtra government agreed to transfer the investigation 2020 Palghar mob lynching case to the CBI.
The Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government in an affidavit said that it is ready and willing to hand over the investigation to the CBI and would have no objection to the same.
The SC was hearing a bunch of writ petitions which sought the transfer of the case to the CBI citing the need for an independent and impartial investigation. It is worth noting that the erstwhile Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government had opposed handing over the case to the CBI.
On April 16, 2020, two sadhus — Chikne Maharaj Kalpavrukshagiri, 70, and Sushilgiri Maharaj, 35, — and their driver Nilesh Telgade, 30, were brutalllynched by a mob who allegedly suspected them to be child kidnappers.
The incident took place in the Palghar district, 140km north of Mumbai.A group of four policemen reached the spot after Kasa Police Station received phone calls.
Eighteen police officers were punished after a departmental inquiry was initiated into the matter. One assistant police inspector was dismissed while another assistant police sub-inspector and a driver were compulsorily retired. A Thane sessions court had granted bail to 89 accused in the matter in January last year.
