In a major blow to the Tamil Nadu government who are trying to save the Christian missionaries in forced conversion case, the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has handed over
M. Lavanya's suicide case to the CBI.
A petition was filed by the father of the deceased girl seeking a proper investigation into this case. In the petition, Lavanya's parents stated that they don't trust the probe by Madras Police and wanted the central bureau to investigate the matter. The family also alleged that the police were not focusing on the religious conversion part of the story and were only focusing on harassment.
It should be remembered that M Lavanya, a student of standard 12th at Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, committed suicide after she was allegedly tortured by her school authorities for refusing to convert to Christianity. Before dying, she gave her dying declaration, in which she alleged that her school was pressuring her to convert to Christianity, and had tortured her for refusing to leave Hinduism.
However, local police have, tried to play down the conversion angle in the case and have mentioned mental torture as the reason behind Lavanya's suicide in its status report submitted before the court.
Noting that, last week, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights lashed out at the Tamil Nadu government for not cooperating in the probe. The NCPCR team led by Chairperson Priyank Kanongo is also visiting the Thanjavur district to probe the minor girl’s suicide case. The team is scheduled to meet with the student’s parents before departing for Madurai later today.
