New Delhi, September 02: The National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB), Ministry of AYUSH has launched a national campaign in order to promote the cultivation of medicinal plants in India as a part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
This campaign will help in increasing farmer’s income and materialise the dream of Green India. The cultivation of medicinal plants on 75,000 hectares of land in the next year in India will be done under the campaign.
The program commenced from Saharanpur, UP and Pune, Maharashtra. This program is the second one in the series being organized by the Ministry of AYUSH under the 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav'.
Medicinal plants were distributed to the farmers in Pune. Those who already cultivated these medicinal plants were felicitated.
Dr. Sanwal, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, NMPB, said that, “this effort will give more impetus to the supply of medicinal plants in the country.”

In Saharanpur, medicinal plants were distributed for free of cost to 150 farmers who attended from several districts nearby. These included 5 main plant species - Night-flowering Jasmine (Parijat), Golden Apple (Bel), Margosa Tree (Neem), Indian Ginseng (Ashwagandha) and Indian Blackberry (Jamun). 750 Jamun saplings were distributed for free to farmers.

Sarbananda Sonowal, Union AYUSH Minister, has said that the country has huge potential in the field of medicinal plants and cultivation of medicinal plants on 75,000 hectares of land will ensure availability of medicines in India. It will be a vast source of income for the farmers. This will make India self-reliant in the field of medicine. In the last 1.5 years, the medicinal plant market has increased immensely, not only in India but the whole world. This is why Ashwagandha is now the third best-selling product in America.
