Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani was buried at a graveyard near his residence in Srinagar’s Hyderpora around 4.30am on Thursday amid tight security. This is after Geelani, 91, the face of separatism in Kashmir for over three decades, died at his home in Srinagar on Wednesday after a prolonged illness. As per the reports, only his close relatives and neighbours were allowed to attend his funeral as the security forces sealed the graveyard.
While even the journalists were prevented from covering the funeral and stopped from going to Hyderpora, restrictions were imposed across Kashmir and the internet and mobile phones were snapped. Only post-paid mobiles of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited were working in Kashmir. Here are ten facts about Kashmiri separatist leader that every Hindu must know-
1. The 92-year-old separatist leader had been suffering from a kidney disease for over two decades, besides having other age-related issues, including dementia.
2. A three-time MLA in the erstwhile state from Sopore, Geelani had virtually become the face of agitation in the 2008 Amarnath land row, 2010 agitation sparked by killing of a youth in Srinagar. He remained under house arrest much of the time since 2008.
3. He is the one who for over last three decades motivated and pushed innocent Kashmiri youth towards violence, bloodshed and suicidal death path in the name of Islamist Jihad and is now no more.
4. He was responsible for the ethnic cleansing of Hindus in Kashmir. He is to go down in the history as a loser jihadi, whom Pakistan eventually dumped.
5. He was the founder member of Hurriyat Conference but broke away and formed his own Tehreek-e-Hurriyat in early 2000. He finally bid farewell to his own Hurriyat Conference in June 2020.
6. In 2020, the neighbouring country, Pakistan had awarded him the Nishan-e-Pakistan.
7. Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed condolences over Geelani’s death and announced the Pakistan flag to fly at half mast to observe a day of official mourning.
8. Geelani’s death came days after speculation of an imminent ban on both factions of the Hurriyat had led to a signboard of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat being hurriedly removed from the annexe of his family home.
9. There were several cases pending against him in the Enforcement Directorate, police and Income Tax Department. Pro-Geelani slogans and messages announcing his death were broadcast over loudspeakers from mosques in Kashmir valley.
10. Geelani’s death is an end of a brutal chapter of bloodshed, violence and separatism in Kashmir. Geelani will be known for death and destruction in Kashmir, Pakistan links and pushing Kashmiri youth into stone-pelting and terror. Hurriyat is defunct now.
According to the police, curfew-like restrictions have been imposed in Kashmir as a precautionary measure. Also, security forces have been deployed in strength at vulnerable places for maintaining law and order.
