Prayagraj, Sept11: If we are to fulfil the inclusive objectives of our constitution, the role of women in the court must be expanded, according to India's President, Ram Nath Kovind. He was addressing today during the laying of the foundation stone for the Uttar Pradesh National Law University and the new Allahabad High Court building complex in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
The President referred to the Allahabad High Court's historic judgement in 1921 to enrol India's first woman lawyer, Ms. Cornelia Sorabji, as a forward-looking move in the cause of women empowerment.
He stated that with the appointment of nine justices, including three women judges, to the Supreme Court last month, a new chapter in the history of women's involvement in the court was written. He emphasised that the presence of four female justices among the total of 33 appointed to the Supreme Court is the most in the judiciary's history.
He stated that these appointments have cleared the path for a female Chief Justice of India to be appointed in the future. He underlined that the development of a truly equitable society would be feasible only if women's involvement in all sectors, including the court, increased.
He stated that the overall number of female justices in the Supreme Court and High Courts is now less than 12%. He stated that in order to fulfil the inclusive goals of our Constitution, the role of women in the court must be expanded.
