Lucknow, August 02: Amid looking at the reports over the chances of Covid's third wave in the country, the Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday banned the religious processions during Muharram in the state.
UP Directorate General of Police (DGP), Mukul Goel released a new set of guidelines for the state on Sunday, which stated Muharram should be observed with COVID appropriate behavior.
A circular from UP DGP Mukul Goel said that police in all districts must ensure that no procession is carried out during Moharram. They have been asked to taken clerics in confidence by respective district administrations to ensure a ban on congregations.
The DGP also informed that during Muharram, displays of any kind of weapon will be disallowed.
Muharram is celebrated by the Shia Muslim community. The 10-day mourning period will begin on August 10.
According to the circular, DGP Mukul Goel has also urged his officers to communicate with religious leaders for spreading awareness about COVID-19 and the need to observe Muharram indoors.
Moreover, Mukul Goel also gave special instructions to police commissioners. He said terrorists may attempt to harm civilians during Muharram. The DGP has also asked the commissioners to keep a close watch on anti-social elements.
