Officials of Coimbatore City Corporation deployed earthmovers and heavy machinery demolished the temple under the garb of encroachment clearance drive. They demolished Amman Kovil, Bannari Amman Kovil, Angala Parameswari, Karupparayan Kovil, Muneeswaran Kovil, and a few other temples. According to the officials, six of the idols have been given away to the public while one has been kept at the corporation office.

The corporation claimed that the demolished temples on the northern bund of the tank were built on encroached land. It should be noted that the Municipal Corporation in Coimbatore is carrying out a drive to pave the path for lake rejuvenation and restoration projects near Selvampathy and Kumarasamy lakes at a cost of 31.25 crores.

The incident has erupted outrage against the DMK govt. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad has raised its voice against the incident and asked the DMK govt that why the government bulldozes temples swiftly while not taking any actions against illegal structures of other religions.

Apart from the VHP, the Hindu Munnani also protested the demolition of temples and has demanded alternate land for shifting the temples and idols. Soon after which, the DMK govt used their power are arrested over 240 members of Hindu Munnani for staging a protest at the site demanding the corporation to provide an alternative place to worship the idols.

Hindu Munnani is the same orgnisation that has petitioned the Supreme Court to reclaim the Vajragiri Hill captured by the Church mafia in the Acharapakkam area of Chengalpattu barely 95 km from Chennai. Christian missionaries have illegally occupied the Vajragiri Hill which houses the 1500-year-old ancient Shiva Temple to prevent Hindus from gaining access to the temple.

In 2020, around 2,400 families were removed from the tank bund after demolishing their houses for encroachment of the lake. They were provided alternative housing in the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board projects.
