Dehradun, June 15: The Uttarakhand government has informed that a 12 feet tall statue of Adi Shankaracharya will be set up at Kedarnath Char Dham shrine. The samadhi was damaged in the June 2013 Kedarnath tragedy.

Uttarakhand Tourism said, "a 12 ft statue of Adi Shankaracharya gets ready to adorn the samadhi of the exponent of Advaita Vedanta at Kedarnath in Uttarakhand." According to the govt, the installation of the statue is a part of the reconstruction work at Shri. Kedarnath Dham.

The statue will be transported from Mysuru to Kedarnath on June 18. It will reach the Gauchar area in Chamoli district on June 25.

Mysuru-based sculptor Arun Yogiraj has sculpted the statue of Adi Shankaracharya in Krishnashila stone. Schist Stone is known to withstand rain, sunshine, and harsh climate. The same kind of stone has been used in carving the sculptures in world-famous Belur-Halebidu temples.

A resident of Agrahara, Yogiraj, and his nine assistants, have been working on this statue for the last seven months. The statue of Shankaracharya will be installed in the proposed ‘Sri Shankaracharya Study Chair and Museum’ in Kedarnath where the Saint Samadhi is built.

Adi Shankaracharya was an Indian mystic and philosopher who consolidated the doctrines of Advaita Vedanta and made significant contributions towards unifying Hinduism by setting up four matches across India. He is believed to have taken samadhi at Kedarnath.

Expressing the happiness, Chief Minister (CM) of Uttarakhand Tirath Singh Rawat said, "This is a moment of great honour for all of us as we welcome the life-size statue of Guru Adi Shankaracharya in our state."

Meanwhile, State's Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaaz said that the installation of the statue in Kedarnath is a moment of great pride and that "it will further motivate us to adopt his teachings for a meaningful and better life."  It is one of the dream projects of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It should be noted that the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of the reconstruction project at Kedarnath in 2017.

Last year, the Uttarakhand high court had directed the state government to complete the restoration of the samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya near Kedarnath Temple within a year.
