Bengaluru, May 14: Noting the injustice that happed with the Indian student Rashmi Samant in Oxford University, Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa wrote a stern letter to Liesl Elder, a senior official at the Oxford University, and condemns the vitriolic attack on Rashmi. In the letter, Yediyuappa has also asked for stringent action again the responsible people.
Who is Rashmi Samant
Rashmi Samant was the first Indian who was elected as President of the Oxford Student Union (SU), however, she had resigned from the post in a few days after facing severe backlash for having Hindu roots and over her views against British colonisation. She was called out for being racist due to her anti-Semitic posts. One of the faculty members in Oxford named Abhijit targeted her for being a devout Hindu and called her Islamophobic for belonging to Karnataka. He also dragged Rashmi’s parents into the controversy. He targeted them for having a Lord Shri Ram display picture on their social media accounts.
He said slammed Abhijit Sarkar, for targeting Rashmi, he said the attack was “highly objectionable and discriminatory”. He said that as the Chief Minister of the state it makes me worried about the well-being of our students. Yediyurappa underlined how Abhijit stalked Rashmi Samant on social media and attacked her and her family for their religion. He also slammed the Abhijit for defaming coastal Karnataka by calling it Islamophobic.
Moreover, he also highlighted the 1981 declaration of the General Assembly of United Nations’ Human Rights Commission Art.2(1) that states that “No one would be subject to discrimination by any state, institution, group of persons, or person on the ground of religion and other beliefs”. He also reminded them, that Karnataka in the year 2019 donated to the University to establish a professorship in Anthropology. In the last, he has urged the University to ensure the safety of Rashmi Samant and her family.
Besides, Hindu students at various British Universities have launched a campaign urging action against the Abhijit Sarkar.
