#JusticeforNambiNarayanan: SC directs CBI to probe in ISRO Espionage Case

New Delhi, April 15: Considering the report submitted by Justice DK Jain on the ISRO Espionage Case, Supreme Court orders the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the 1994 espionage case against the former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientist Nambi Narayanan.

The court passed the judgment while hearing Centre's plea seeking consideration of the report filed by a high-level committee regarding the role of erring police officials in the 1994 espionage case. A bench of the Apex Court, headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar passed the order after accepting the Justice DK Jain Committee report on lapses on the part of Kerala Police officers in the ISRO spying case.
 
 
During the hearing, the Court said that the Committee has submitted its report stating: "It is a serious issue and required further investigation." The report will remain in a sealed cover and will be given to the CBI authorities to proceed in accordance with the law," the top court ordered and made it clear that the report is not made for publication.

The bench said, in terms of the September 18, 2018 order, the committee headed by Justice (retired) DK Jain, has submitted its report on March 25, 2021, in a sealed cover." We direct the registry to forward one copy of the report to the Director/Acting Director of CBI," the Court said.
 
 
The court has further asked CBI to submit its report in three months. It also added that the CBI will be at liberty to treat the report as a preliminary report. It has made it clear that the committee's report can't be made public and can't be shared with anyone, including former ISRO scientist S Nambi Narayanan.
 
Soon after the result, Narayanan had welcomed the federal agency probe into the alleged police conspiracy to implicate him in the case. Expressing the happiness he said, "I am happy. I sought a central agency probe that led to the conspiracy that delayed the country's cryogenic project."
