Rome, Mar 9: Star Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia, has regained the World No. 1 ranking after winning second successive gold medal at Matteo Pellicone Ranking Series here.
The wrestler defeated Tulga Tumur Ochir of Mongolia by 2-2 criteria in 65 kg the final freestyle event which was organised in Rome. He won the event after getting a two-pointer in last 30 seconds of bout. This was the first international competition of Bajrang Punia since the Covid-19 outbreak.

Punia was ranked at the second spot in world’s ranking before the Matteo Pellicone Ranking Series was started. His win in the event helped him regain the top spot in the 65 kg weight category. He has a total point of 14 which is the highest among the others. He made the full use of tournament before the Tokyo Olympics 2021.

The 27-year-old had booked his berth in the Tokyo Olympic Games in the month of September 2019 after he won the bronze at World Championships.

Punia will now be back in the national camp but wants to train abroad before the Asian Wrestling Championships, scheduled to be held in Almaty, Kazakhstan from April 9 to 11.
