Contoi, March 27: Poll day violence lifts up as TMC leaders attack the car of BJP leader Soumendu Adhikari in Contoi, West Bengal. Dibyendu Adhikari, TMC leader and brother of Soumendu Adhikari in an update to one of the news agencies said, "I got to know that vehicle (of Soumendu Adhikari) was attacked in Contai with help of TMC block president Ram Govind Das. Soumendu isn't injured. Driver was beaten up. I've informed Police Observer".
Also, Soumendu Adhikari revealed to the news agency that under the leadership of TMC block president Ram Govind Das and his wife, poll rigging was underway at three polling booths. "My arrival here created problem for them to continue with their mischiefs so they attacked my car and thrashed my driver", he said.
After days of high-octane campaigns and a series of lucrative poll promises by contesting parties, the first phase of elections in West Bengal got underway at 7 am today. The state of West Bengal witnessed a peaceful polling in the early hours of Saturday with 24.61 per cent of turnout till 11 am. Whereas, Assam recorded 24.48 per cent of voter turnout till 11 am.
Voting is being held today in 30 of Bengal’s 294 Assembly seats. There are 191 candidates in the fray, and over 73 lakh voters are on the rolls to exercise their franchise. The prominent candidates include BJP district president Sukhamoy Satpati, actress June Maliah, four-time Congress MLA from Baghmundi Nepal Mahato and Sanjukta Morcha’s Susanta Ghosh.
