New Delhi, March 16: In a positive development, the University Grant Commission (UGC) announced that it has recognized the Chartered Accountant (CA), Company Secretary (CS), Cost and Works Accountant (ICWA) qualification as equivalent to a Post-graduate degree.
The positive announcement was made by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India ICAI. "The University Grants Commission @ugc_india has resolved that CA Qualification will be treated equivalent to PG Degree based on requests submitted from @theicai. This will not only help CA's for pursuing higher studies but will also facilitate the mobility of Indian CAs globally," the institute tweeted.
The commission arrived at this decision, based on experts' recommendation in its 550th meeting held on 18 February. With that recognition CA, CS or ICWA qualified persons can also apply for UGC-NET as their degrees will be considered as a Master's degree.
It should be noted that the Institute of Chartered Accountant (ICAI), the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), and the Institute of Cost Works Accountant of India (ICWA) had requested UGC, to consider the certificate courses provided by them to be considered as Postgraduate degree equivalent.
Apart from ICAI, ICSI has also welcomed the move, saying, “UGC recognises Company Secretary Qualification as equivalent to PG Degree based on representations submitted by ICSI. This will leverage the CS Profession across the globe. ICSI is thankful to UGC for acceding to its request.”
