Madras HC asks Centre to consider request to print image of Netaji on currency

New Delhi, February 24: Acknowledging the contribution of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose towards country's freedom movement, the Madras High Court has directed the Central Government to consider a request to print the image of the freedom fighter on Indian currency.
The court order this while hearing the plea filed by K. K. Ramesh seeking directions to the Government of India to print a photograph of Netaji on currency notes to make the younger generation understand and appreciate his contribution towards securing India’s independence.
While hearing the plea division bench of Justices MM Sundresh and S Ananth also asked the Reserve Bank of India to consider the petitioner's request saying it is a proposal worth considering as the Netaji’s contribution towards the Indian freedom movement was unparalleled.
The bench said, "We need not say anything on the greatness of Netaji, apart from the contribution made, which starts from his resignation from the coveted post to the creation of the Indian National Army. His contribution towards the Indian Freedom movement is unparallel."
However, the bench also noted that in the interest of judicial restraint, it cannot order the Central government to carry out this measure.
Bench added, "Though we are of the view that prayer, as sought for, cannot be granted, one cannot ignore the great sacrifice made by the great leader and the persons, who served along with him. The history of the nation will have to be told and retold again and again for posterity to remember. Thus, keeping in view of the judicial constrain, we are not in a position to accede to the request made by the petitioner."
