Pune, February 24: "The survival of Hindu businessman in Tamil Nadu has become a question mark. It's a challenge to the entire Hindu business community", said
Shri Bala Gauthaman, the director of Vedic Science Research Centre while addressing the issue of Islamist threats to Marwaris in the state of Tamil Nadu. This is probably after a recent worrisome incident in TN where a little known political party ssued pamphlets in Trichy threatening the members of Marwari community to leave the state.
According to the reports, the pamphlet issued by a Tiruchi based party named ‘Tamizhaga Makkal Jananayaka Katchi’ (Tamil Nadu People’s Democracy Party) last week accused the Marwari community of fomenting ‘communal’ unrest in the state by funding the BJP. The Islamists further other alleged that Marwaris are the ‘fuel’ that keeps the ‘vehicle’ BJP running.
Threatening the Marwari community, the pamphlet said that ‘if the fuel is stopped, the vehicle would automatically stop’. The organisation had also issued a warning saying any violence and damage to public property directed towards Marwaris would be the responsibility of the Marwari community and had asked the government to collect compensation from them.
The handbill blatantly reads- “The Bharatiya Janata Party members are abusing Islam; so the thing is to stop the abuse against the Muslims, you have to take the fire out of the party. The only thing we can do is to send these Marwaris out because they are funding them (BJP)”

Shri Bala Gauthaman in a video raised a lot of significant questions pinching the very logic. "From 1989 to till date, 136 Hindus and policemen were killed by Islamic Jihadis and during these 30-40 years, we can see a tremendous rise in business among the Muslim community. What about that?", he said. "Previously they were confined only to some tannery business or they were confined to second-hand sales of iron or other things. But when the Muslims started to flourish in business, more people are killed by Jihadis. If I go by this theory, this benchmark of abusing a particular religion, then this means that no Muslims should start a business, if I go by this particular benchmark about what is really fuelling religious bigotry", he added.
Over the last 30-40 years, the business community in Tamil Nadu which once dominated the business landscape like the Chettiyars, the Nadars, the Asaris and most of these guys are now losing their business and Muslims have now entered into all business segments, he noted. Further commenting on the Tamizhaga Makkal Jananayaka Katchi, the political party name, Gauthaman said that it was using a pseudo-name and that they were using Tamil jargon which is riddled in the state. "This is not a challenge against the minority Marwari community in Tamil Nadu, this is a challenge against the entire country, the entire Hindu religion", he added.
This is not a new phenomenon in Tamil Nadu has seen against a particular community. The state is known for its notorious hate campaigns against Brahmins. Dravida Kazhagam, Seeman’s Naam Tamilar Katchi, Thirumurugan Gandhi’s May 17 Movement have targeted and peddled hate against certain communities. An Aeronautical Engineer who went on to do his M.Phil in Sociology, Shri Gauthaman is also a documentary film maker who has made a documentary on the Jihadi threat to Tamil Nadu and other topics.
