New Delhi, Dec 6: On Saturday evening, six villagers were reportedly killed in Oting village of Mon district when they were allegedly fired at by Army para commandos who suspected them to be terrorists. The commandos were waiting for militants but killed coal mine workers returning home. Soon after, a village search party found the bodies and attacked soldiers, leading to firing in which seven more civilians died. A soldier was also killed.
On Sunday, one more civilian when security forces were resisting a mob attack on an Assam Rifles camp. According to the reports, at least 20 people were injured in the ambush and the violence that followed. Expressing regret, the Army on Sunday said that incident of Nagaland killings is being investigated at the highest level and assured that appropriate action will be taken as per the course of law. Terming the incident as "unfortunate" the Army said, "the incident and its aftermath is deeply regretted."
The Army informed that a specific operation was planned in the area of Tiru in Mon district of Nagaland on Saturday. The operation was based on credible intelligence of the likely movement of insurgents in the area. The security forces have suffered severe injuries in the incident including one soldier who succumbed to the injuries," the Army said in an official statement.
The Nagaland government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the firing incident said an order issued by the state home department signed by Chief Secretary J Alam. It has also prohibited all mobile internet, data services, bulk SMS of all providers in the entire area of Mon district with immediate effect.
On the other hand, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will give a statement on the Nagaland firing incident in both the Houses of the Parliament on Monday. Reports suggest that PM Narendra Modi held a meeting with the top ministers in the Parliament over the Nagaland firing incident and the government's strategy in both Houses.
Several Opposition MPs in Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha moved notices in their respective houses to discuss the firing incident in Nagaland in which at least 13 civilians died.
